However, I suspect it is God's blueprint for his church and his commonsense approach to teaching the gospel that has caused the membership to soar. As pastor of Bethany Baptist church in Lindenwold, NJ, the Bishop has found himself as the leader of thousands of parishioners, excluding the additional 100,000 or so who are part of the Abundant Harvest Fellowship of Churches, an organization for which he's the presiding officer. He's also the best-selling author of Healed Without Scars, a book that has helped hundreds of thousands put the broken pieces of their lives back together again. Yet, Bishop Evans talks easily about his ministry and the difference he's making in people's lives. When I joked about his candor and meekness, he brushed it off by saying, in part, "Jesus was out among the people."
What was your career plans before being called into the ministry? I was doing a few things. I was a private business owner and I also wanted to be a lawyer. I went from being a restaurateur to working in a bank and becoming a vice president there at three of the major banks in the world and was heading in my thoughts to law school and the next thing that happened I heard God call me to preach. I ran for about a year. I saw how preachers were treated and I didn't want any part of that. |
